BWSSB starts de-silting work

19 May

A massive de-silting drive that the BWSSB started last Monday to avoid clogging and overflowing of drains hopes to bring relief to the residents of Koramangala, especially those living near manholes and drains.

The BWSSB has engaged about 500 sanitary workers and deployed 76 jetting machines across the city to de-silt over 55,000 manholes within a month.

In Koramangala, de-silting of manholes and sewers began with the deployment of jetting machines and workers. BWSSB engineers along with BBMP engineers and the Corporator are overseeing the cleaning drive. Cleaning work has been completed in a few blocks like Koramangala 8th Block, 5th Block, 4th Block and 6th Block.

“In the coming days, all other blocks will be taken up. Two or three days will be dedicated for this purpose only. Jetting machines are used to draw out all the silt and keep the manholes free of any blockages,” said BWSSB assistant engineer Venkataramana.Even citizens can take part and get the manholes cleaned.

“Whenever it rains, one can find overflowing manholes near 7th Cross-16th Main junction of 3rd Block and close to BDA Complex; 3rd ‘B’ Main on Adugodi road of 8th Block; near Sony World junction; 80 feet road from Passport Office to Raheja Signal and beyond; Devi Eye Hospital road in 6th Block and adjacent roads, etc. I hope this time there will be no overflowing manholes,” said Narasimhamurthy, a resident.

Another resident, Dr Umeshwar of the Koramangala Residents’ Forum said last time they had to struggle to get repaired the overflowing manhole/drain in front of a doctor’s house in Koramangala 6th Block. “At least this year we hope there will be no water logging and such drives should be taken annually before the onset of monsoon.”

Rain, hailstorm bring misery to weekenders

13 May

As many as eight trees were uprooted in Koramangala area on
last Sunday and Monday after a hailstorm and high velocity winds accompanied by a downpour hit the area.

The incessant rain threw life out of gear when the residents were enjoying the weekend. There was no power for hours after a huge tree fell, snapping power lines in Koramangala 3rd Block and 4th Block near BDA Complex on Sunday afternoon.

Though it was a busy road, luckily no one was injured in the incident as it was a Sunday and there was hardly any traffic. The BBMP forest wing and Adugodi Traffic police cleared the way by engaging men with battery-operated saws to cut down the tree.

On Monday too, parts of Koramangala and Venkatapura area had no electricity due to snapping of power lines when more tree branches fell on them. The BBMP control room was flooded with telephone calls from the residents. The uprooted trees were mainly located in Koramangala 3rd, 6th and 4th blocks. However, there was not much damage to property. No loss of life or injuries was reported.

“The uprooted trees were either old or had disease-affected roots. Besides the downpour that lashed the city throughout the week had loosened the soil. There are also chances of the roots getting damaged by the digging of trenches for laying pipelines or cables,” says BBMP tree officer Balakrishna.

The candlelight vigil was held under the banner of India Against Corruption (IAC) between 8 pm and 8.30 pm.Thus, the IT suburb of Koramangala joined other cities in this national movement started by Anna Hazare.

“Perhaps, this is just the spark to ignite and inspire millions in our country,” said the residents who were shouting slogans ‘enough is enough’, ‘we want the Jan Lokpal Bill’ and so on.

Each of the participants urged the passers-by to recognise the need to fight corruption.

The vigil was supported by Major Kapur from Koramangala 1st Block, Srinivasan J, Nevina Kamath from Koramangala 6th Block, Dr Umeshwar from Koramangala 5th Block as well as many representatives of various RWAs in Koramangala and other areasa.

Koramangala residents vow to end corruption

28 Apr

Residents of Koramangala did their bit in standing behind Anna Hazare in his campaign against corruption. A candlelight vigil was organised by the KUCWA (Koramangala United Citizens’ Welfare Association) on April 9 from 6.30 pm to 7.30 pm at 6th Block Park.

The venue had earlier been planned for the Sony World Junction in Koramangala but was later shifted to a park as Major Kapur of KUCWA was particular about not disturbing traffic, or causing convenience to pedestrians.

There was a lot of enthusiasm among children and youngsters. Over 130 people of all ages from 6 to 75 years gathered at the Lakshmidevi Park in Koramangala 6th Block at 6:30 pm with candles. Although the end of Hazare’s fast had been announced the previous night, residents were keen to express their solidarity and took out a candlelit procession within the park, shouting slogans in support of the nation and the Gandhian movement for truth and justice.

After completing a round of the park, the supporters gathered in a Gazebo in the centre and sang songs like ‘We shall overcome’ and ‘Mann mein hai Vishwas’. The gathering was then addressed by Dr Radhakrishnan, Dr Umeshwar and Gurudas of Koramangala Swabhimana.

Also the residents sang songs like ‘We are the World’ and ‘We shall overcome’ led by Biba Bhusri. Young Priya Radhakrishnan gave a small speech on how she felt about the movement. The road ahead is long and everyone needs to be united and stand behind Anna Hazare.

BBMP starts demolishing SWD, some happy others protest

15 Apr

During his surprise visit to NGV housing complex in Koramangala BBMP, Commissioner Siddaiah had ordered demolition of the concrete covering on the Storm Water Drain (SWD).

And within 48 hours, action started last Thursday. Over a dozen men armed with hammers and gas-cutting equipment gathered to demolish the concrete roof of the drain behind Mallaprabha Block of NGV.

Most of the residents realised what was happening when Cityplus reached their homes on Friday morning. Many of them gathered and under the banner of NGV Residents’ Welfare Associations Apex Body tried to protest in vain. Since Friday, an excavating machine is being used for the demolition purpose.

The BBMP’s action followed after residents complained that the pillars erected on the SWD to support the concrete roof were preventing free flow of water in the drain. Garbage had accumulated at the mouth of the concrete covering and thus had led to flooding of low-lying areas of NGV, Koramangala and Ejipura. Also the concrete covering was hindering the de-silting process.

The High Court had directed BBMP that the SWD must not be covered.

Some of the residents who are in favour of the demolition were happy, but those living near the drain were unhappy. They say the stench emanating from the drain is unbearable and it may give rise to diseases once the cover is demolished.

It will also lead to rapid breeding of mosquitoes. Some of the residents were planning to move court and get a stay order. When Cityplus visited the spot, the contractor said that it may take a month to complete the demolition work.

Sewage water mixes with drinking line, residents fall ill

15 Apr

Taps in houses of at least two streets in Koramangala 5th Block have started spewing sewage-contaminated water for the last five days. Many residents have fallen ill after consuming the water supplied through BWSSB pipelines of 3rd Cross and 4th Cross of 17th ‘B’ Main road.

The BWSSB is yet to locate where exactly the leakage is happening. Initially, the residents did not notice it but many started getting upset stomachs, especially children.

Soon after the residents complained, the BWSSB men on last Monday dug up the junction of 3rd Cross and 17 ‘B’ Main road and cut open the water pipeline. It was found that sewage was flowing in it from the higher end of the 3rd Cross towards the 4th Cross.

“Open the sump and you get a foul smell, open the tap and you get sewage mixed water. It is literally a microbial soup. See the froth and smell in water,” said residents when Cityplus visited the spot on last Monday.

Many residents had tried contacting officials earlier, but no one turned up till last Monday.

“After drinking water, my children have fallen sick. They have stomach upsets, while my nephew has been admitted to the hospital where she is taking glucose drips,” said a resident, Syed Yassin. “I was out of station and my wife and children didn’t know what exactly happened, so they drank the same water. Now we are using bottled water

Save us from stray dogs, cry residents

14 Apr

Demanding an end to street dog menace, nearly 20 residents of Koramangala 8th Block, 1st ‘C’ Main road have complained to the BBMP Commissioner, BBMP Health Officer, police and the secretary of Koramangala 8th Block Residents’ Association.

In their complaint, they have stated that nearly a pack of 10 dogs roam freely on the road. Of them, three black coloured dogs are the most ferocious.

“At least three persons, including three-year-old Aashish, five-year-old Adithya and 23-year-old Geethanjali Sharma have been bitten in the past few weeks. Their treatment bills went up to few thousand rupees. As a result no children can play near their house without the company of elders,” said Bhujang Shetty, a resident.

Sometime back, the dog squad came and caught few dogs and dropped them back after three days. When asked, the authorities said that they release the dogs at the same place after sterilising them.

Waste segregation drive a hit

13 Apr

The Wealth of Waste (WoW) project kicked off by the Koramangala 3rd Block RWA about a month ago has so far been a great success, thanks to the co-operation of residents and committed work by WoW volunteers. The current coverage is about 275 households spread over 17 streets and the success rate of the pick-ups has been between 65 per cent and 75 per cent each week. It is estimated that the actual success rate is higher given that even households locked due to travel/vacation are being conservatively considered as unsuccessful.

The concept is simple: Residents are provided re-usable WoW bags in which they segregate all their recyclable dry waste (plastic, paper, metals, e-waste).

A separate Saturday pick-up is organised with the help of the regular waste collectors. The waste is then recycled with the help of Saahas, an NGO that specialises in waste management and has a unit in Ejipura.

The waste is clean, easy to handle and not soggy or dirty, thereby giving maximum recycle value. The volume of daily waste collected has reduced (less to transport to landfills). The waste collectors too benefit as they do not have to sift through the garbage in an effort to retrieve recyclable waste and they are compensated with the value from the waste collected.
What is heartening to note is the entire process is volunteer and resident-driven. While an initial awareness event kick-started the campaign,

efforts thereafter have hinged upon committed and passionate volunteers for each street. Every street has one or more residents who are WoW Green Warriors (volunteer).
